Can I use a notebook computer to get on X-Box Live or PSN?

I have a question. I only have a laptop (that's a notebook computer) with wireless internet. If I use an Ethernet cable to hook up on one end on the laptop, & the other end on the back of the PS3 system or an X-Box 360 system, do you think I'll be able to connect (download) PSN or X-Box Live? I'm curious. I've never thought of that until now.

1. I don't quite understand. On Xbox.com you can check your friend list, add friends, send messages and other stuff if that's what you wanted to do.
